Portacath catheters are small medical appliances that are put beneath the skin. The catheter itself then connects to a port vein. The port has a septum through which different drugs can be put in the blood stream of the patient and blood can be drawn many times for different test. With the portacath catheter the discomfort for the patient is reduced because otherwise the patient has to be injected with a separate needle for many times.
The catheter is usually installed in the upper chest and in that way the patient’s hands are free. The portacath catheter is also called ‘port’. The port is most often used for hematology and oncology patients but they are also used and for hemodialysis patients.
The name of this catheter comes from the brand name of such appliances. The way it works is by placing a small plastic tube in the vein. The port also has a little reservoir that prevents blood from going out of it and dust and other things from going in it. When the portacath catheter is no longer needed it can easily be removed by a surgeon or by an interventional radiologist and in a few days the patient wouldn’t even remember having such a catheter.
The different catheters vary in size and in the material they are made of. The size is chosen according to the lumen of the veins of the particular person and the material is chosen according to the time the port would remain in the vein of the patient. It is common technique to replace the catheter with a new one after it has been on the patient for quite a long time.
There are, however, some complications that may occur but they are really rare due to the fact that medicine is really advanced nowadays and doctors do absolutely everything in order to prevent infections, thrombosis and other possible complications. If something occurs it is easily treatable and that’s why you shouldn’t even bother if you have a port installed.
